Symbolic Places to Celebrate the 2012 Apocalypse in the U.S.

Around December 21, 2012, we are sure to see droves of people traveling to South America to “celebrate the apocalypse” around the Mayan ruins. The esoteric belief of the world ending near the end of 2012 has become ingrained in our culture and is sure to become a cash cow for the travel industry. There are other symbolic places to celebrate the end of the world other than South America.

Las Vegas

I can see many people heading to Las Vegas to celebrate the apocalypse in Sin City. It would be symbolic to welcome the end of humanity in a drunken stupor among people who are participating in almost every type of debauchery imaginable. Plus, partiers will be close to Area 51 if aliens decide to save part of the human race.

New York

Some see NY, NY, as the capital of the world, and it is tradition to ring in the New Year by either being within the city or watching on TV. Why not twist the tradition and head there to ring in the end of the world? I am sure the crowds there on December 21, 2012, will rival many of the New Year’s parties of the past.

Washington, D.C.

Our nation’s capital is often seen as the seat of power in the world. The “Leader of the Free World” is a symbolic title given to our president since it is perceived that his job is to ensure freedom within our borders and within the borders of all other countries in the world. A Washington, D.C., party would symbolize how the U.S. has power over so much in the world, but so little in the cosmos.

Providence

Many fans of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft will head to his birthplace in Providence, Rhode Island, to celebrate the “Awakening of Cthulhu.” Fans of the writer have joked about December 21, 2012, being the night when the giant god will rise from the ocean depths to overtake the world. While the Mayans and Lovecraft never made mention of squid-headed giant humanoid destroying the world on the specific date, fans are sure to continue to connect the stories.

Denver

Conspiracy theorists have pointed to intriguing designs and artwork inside the Denver International Airport as being the seat of the New World Order. The fabled secret organization supposedly has extensive tunnels underneath the facility that would be large enough to house hundreds, if not thousands of people from the apocalypse. Personally, I would not want to be stuck in an airport at the end of time.

Boyers

The large Iron Mountain storage facility is located in Boyers, Pennsylvania. The miles and miles of tunnels were the location of the shooting of “Day of the Dead” and are located in the general area where George Romero shot his first three zombie apocalypse movies. We do not know what the end of the world will hold, so why not celebrate the idea of zombies?

We look at the achievements of ancient societies and wonder if there were things they knew that we have disregarded. Many of us want to go down with a fight, but the end of the world would not give us the chance. Wherever you celebrate the apocalypse, make sure it holds a symbolic address to your fears. Also, make sure you book a flight home after we wake up alive the day after the 2012 apocalypse.
