Survival Kit for Writers – the Essentials

These are the items to put into your laptop bag in case you are caught in a writer’s emergency situation.

First and most important is a pen and small notebook. You never know when you will get caught somewhere without power or Wi-Fi access.

Then you need to bring along your PDA for those emergency Twitter updates so your followers know you may be a little late with your next story.

Next, make sure that iPod is well charged before placing in the survival kit, you may need inspiration, or distraction from the fact that you aren’t typing right now.

Due to the stereotype, I must suggest you include cigarettes and a light. I know, its so cliche, but I never said you had to smoke them.

If you are so inclined, throw in your mini-laptop. They are lightweight, but the battery is usually good for an hour or two of writing in a sticky situation. If not, pull out that pen and paper.

Always bring a bottle of water, because writing is hard work.

(Remember, in a jam, your PDA Smartphone will type out and send in anything that you would like to write.)

Try to record as much information and interviews as you can about the crisis on your tape recorder.

As a writer it is likely that you enjoy reading, so bring a book or magazine. That way you can critique their writing and brag that you can do better.

You can always bring whatever toy is sitting by your computer right now. No? It’s the one right there, on your desk. Won’t admit it, eh? Okay, fine, go without your link to reminding yourself that you are a child inside like everyone else.

In case of writing emergency, grab your laptop bag with these items and run. I promise that with this survival kit you will be able to breathe the fresh air and smell the change of seasons coming. And you can write all about it from there. Don’t worry, we will survive this!
