Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich

One night last week, while perusing the contents of the frozen food cases at a local Walgreens Pharmacy, I saw Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich for the first time. It looked so good, I decided to purchase one of the sandwiches right away. After eating one of these frozen sandwiches, I think it would be a good product to review.

Presented here, as a service to the consumer at large, is an article which reviews and examines Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich.

Size
The net weight of the standard sized package of Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich is seven ounces (198 grams). According to the package’s nutrition facts label, one sandwich counts as one serving. When I tried one of these sandwiches a few days ago, I ate only one half of the sandwich at a time, but that was because of the high fat content of the sandwich.

In physical size, this is a good sized sandwich. It measures in at roughly 7″ x 2.5″.

Price
The regular retail price charged for one seven ounce Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich at the West Hartford, Connecticut Walgreens Pharmacy where I purchased it is $2.29. This price definitely seems reasonable to me, considering the size and overall quality of the item.

Texture / Consistency
This pepperoni and cheese sandwich offers several different textures. Firstly, the fresh bread roll that holds the sandwich really is just that. It is a good – sized roll that tastes amazingly fresh for a frozen item. The roll is nice and chewy and features a texture that is close to that of a sub shop – style roll.

A large amount of loosely – piled pepperoni is present in this sandwich and it is real, unadulterated pepperoni, just like you would find at a pizza parlor or sub shop. The pepperoni is also appealingly chewy and the white American cheese product is creamy and gooey, when cooked according to directions.

The cooking instructions on the package label state that best cooking results can be obtained by heating the sandwich in a conventional oven and that is how I heated it. The overall mouth feel offered by this sandwich is quite enjoyable.

Nutritional Facts
Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich contains 750 calories, with 470 calories from fat, per one sandwich serving. This sandwich also contains 23 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 53 grams total fat, 105 mg of cholesterol, 2040 mg of sodium, 40 grams total carbohydrates, 0 grams of dietary fiber, 2 grams of sugars and 30 grams of protein, per one sandwich serving.

Taste / Flavor
When it comes to flavor, Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich really delivers. Unfortunately, along with all of that flavor lurks a very high percentage of saturated fat and total fat. After I read the nutritional facts for this product before heating it, I decided to eat only one – half of the sandwich in one sitting.

This frozen sandwich really does taste quite fresh and appealing. If you’re a fan of pepperoni, chances are, you would enjoy eating this variety of the tasty meat. The American cheese product in this sandwich tastes as fresh as if it were just taken out of the dairy case and the roll tastes better than most of the rolls in other packaged frozen sandwiches I’ve eaten.

On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign this product a rating of 9.25.

Packaging
Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich is packaged in a long and attractive rectangular cardboard box. A mouth watering photo illustration of the enclosed sandwich is set against a black background on the front label and all relevant ingredient and nutritional information as well as a company and product overview are listed on the rear label.

A very interesting packaging feature with this frozen pizza is the plastic film pouch in which the sandwich resides. Unlike most frozen sandwich plastic wrappers, which are removed or opened before the item is heated, the pouch holding this sandwich is placed into the oven and the sandwich cooks inside of the pouch. On the rear label, it is stated that this pouch is oven safe, speeds cooking time and helps to cook one’s oven clean.

Overall Rating
All things considered, Leonetti’s Pepperoni & Cheese Handmade Sandwich is a very fresh and tasty item that lives up to its name, as far as being handmade. Because of its very high fat levels however, I will eat only one half of one of these sandwiches at a time.

Would I purchase and eat this item again ? The answer is ‘yes’. I think if I purchase it again, it would be nice to slice this sandwich into thin rounds to be served as hors d’oeuvres or snacks. From a flavor, texture and appearance perspective, this reasonably priced frozen sandwich is recommended. Be aware of the nutritional facts, though.
