Green Living: Crocheted Bobble Rug Made from Repurposed Blue Jeans

Save those old jeans and make a new washable, heavy-duty bobble rug! Crochet a bobble rug using 1-inch strips of denim fabric and a single crochet stitch. The following pattern will make a crocheted denim bobble rug 24-inches wide and 36-inches long. Add more chain stitches to the first row, in multiples of two, to make a larger rug.

Things You’ll Need:

Old denim jeans
Ruler
Scissors
Size M/N-13 9mm crochet hook

Denim Strip Instructions:

Step 1 – Cut or tear the denim into 1-inch strips.

Step 2 – Cut a 1-inch hole perpendicular to both ends of the 1-inch ends of each strip. Center the 1-inch hole approximately ½-inch from the end of the strips.

Step 3 – Connect the strips together by inserting the end of a strip (Strip 1) through the opening cut on the end of a second strip (Strip 2.) Pull Strip 1 through the hole in Strip 2 approximately 4-inches. Insert the opposite end of Strip 1 through the opening on the 4-inch portion. Pull Strip 1 tight. This connects the two strips together without forming a knot, thus making it easy to crochet. Repeat the process to connect all strips. An option way to connect the strips is sewing each one together.

Step 4 – Roll the connected denim strips into a ball or several balls.

Denim Bobble Rug Instructions:

Row 1 – Chain 45 stitches. Single crochet in the second chain from the end and in each chain across.

Row 2 through 32- Chain 1 stitch. Single crochet in the first stitch then treble crochet in the next – repeat the pattern across the rug.

Row 33 – Chain 1 stitch. Single crochet in each stitch across. Do not tie off.

Finishing – Single crochet around the outer edge of the rug. Tie off. Weave the end of the denim through the last row of stitching.

Note: This pattern will work with any type of fabric. The durability of the rug depends on the type of fabric used. Recycle or repurpose bed sheets, curtains, dresses and old dress slacks into colorful bobble rugs.
