Free Placement Shopping Bag Instructions

Go green and recycle three old fabric placements into a usable shopping bag. Add character to the shopping bag by embroidering or cross-stitching a design on the front of the bag. This simple craft takes less than 30 minutes to complete.

Things You’ll Need:

Three fabric placements
Ruler
Scissors
Straight pins
Sewing machine
Tread

Instructions:

Step 1 – Cut one placement into two strips 2-by 21-inches. Fold the cut edge of each strip back ½-inch and pin in place. Zigzag along the cut edges to secure them to the strip. Set aside. The two strips are used for the handles of the shopping bag.

Step 2 – Place one placement on a flat work surface so the short edge is on a vertical axis. Overlap the second placement over the right edge ½-inch. Pin in place. Zigzag down the edge of the placement. Flip the bag over and repeat the process on the opposite side.

Step 3 – Overlap the left edge of the placement shopping bag ½-inch. Pin in place. Zigzag down the edge of the placement. Turn the bag inside out and repeat the process on the remaining edge.

Step 4 – Pin the bottom edge of the placements together. Sew along the bottom edge with a ½-inch seam. Turn the shopping bag so the seam is on the inside.

Step 5 – Measure across the front of the bag and place a straight pin at the center mark. Measure 3-inches on either side of the center pin. Pin the handle to that location so the handle overlaps the bag by 3-inches. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the bag.

Step 6 – Line the pressure foot up with the edge of the handle. Sew around the 3-inch rectangle to secure the handle to the shopping bag. Repeat the process on each handle overlap.

Make several placement shopping bags to give as gifts. These shopping bags are very durable and machine washable.
