Devitt’s Nursery, Christmas on the Farm and Eggbert the Talking Egg

If you lived in the Hudson Valley of New York during the 1970’s thru the late 1990’s, then Christmas on the Farm was a huge event. Some estimated that the attendance at Devitt’s Nursery for the Christmas on the Farm drew anywhere from 75,000 to 80,000 people a year. Of course, the huge attraction was always Eggbert – the Talking Egg.

To fully understand how Eggbert and all of his animal friends like Petunia the Pig could draw such huge crowds, well; let’s just say you would have to experience it firsthand to see the effects on the kids – both young and old.

While other towns had Santa Claus and the reindeer – we had Eggbert and his farm animals. Eggbert came into Devitt’s Nursery when Jack Devitt brought him here in the 1970’s and Eggbert made his last appearance in 1999.

When new owners, Joe and Chris, purchased Devitt’s in October of last year they decided to prepare for Eggbert’s return. Beginning on Friday November 25, the farm trail will be open at all times the nursery is open. Eggbert will be greeting visitors from his newly constructed castle beginning on Friday November 25th from 10 am to 5 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm. Chris and Joe welcome ‘children of all ages’ to come to the farm and hold a conversation with Eggbert.

In addition to the Farm and Eggbert, souvenirs of the event, holiday decorating supplies such as lights and roping and fresh cut Christmas trees will be available for purchase as long as they last. Children will be able to color pictures of Eggbert and they will be hung up along the trail for all to enjoy.
