Comparison of Candy-Flavored Protein Shakes for Gastric Bypass Patients

Gastric bypass patients are often advised to use protein shakes to supplement their diets, and unfortunately some of those shakes just do not taste good at all. Gastric bypass patients are also advised to avoid sugary treats like candy to prevent dumping syndrome and weight regain. What if there were protein shakes that tasted like candy? Well, there are! Here are a few of my favorites.

All Whey Butterscotch Maple Fudge

This is a rich, sweet flavor and can be mixed with soy milk, skim milk or plain water. I think it’s really nice topped with a spoonful of fat free whipped topping. It contains 25 grams of protein, 130 calories and three grams of sugar per serving.

BSN Lean Dessert Chocolate Coconut Candy Bar

This protein powder disappointed me a bit. All the BSN Lean Dessert protein powders make a rich, creamy shake, even if you mix them with water instead of milk. What disappointed me was the fact that I could barely taste the coconut flavor; it tasted a lot like chocolate milk to me. Perhaps adding a tiny bit of coconut extract would improve the candy bar taste. One scoop has 130 calories and 20 grams of protein, with three grams of sugar.

Next Proteins Designer Vanilla Praline

This flavor reminds me of ice cream, especially if it’s mixed with skim milk. If you put it in the blender with a cup of skim milk and a handful of ice, it tastes a lot like a milkshake. It has 18 grams of protein, 90 calories and two grams of sugar per serving; of course, mixing it with skim milk instead of water increases those numbers a bit.

Optimum Nutrition Caramel Toffee Fudge

I love using this protein powder in a hot protein drink. I mix a scoop of the protein powder with two ounces of soy milk in a cup, stirring well to make a smooth paste. Then I slowly pour that paste into a cup of hot coffee, stirring constantly. One scoop of Optimum Nutrition caramel toffee fudge protein powder has 130 calories and 24 grams of protein with only one gram of sugar.
