Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, no appetite, back pain -19 years old, female…what is this?
Q: I have scoliosis and have had a lot of upper back pain since I started working a few weeks ago. I haven’t seen my x-rays to know what exactly is going on (scoliosis doesn’t normally cause back pain)…this may have nothing to do with what’s been going on, but I figured I’d mention it. Since last night I have been nauseous, with no appetite, today I had diarrhea, I feel very fatigued after a good night’s sleep, dizzy, and I may have a low-grade fever as well (I don’t have access to a thermometer but I feel feverish). I have had shooting pains in my lower abdomen last night and this morning, but they are not present right now. The only way for me to see a doctor is to go to the emergency room – I am on a college campus with no doctor, and my insurance will only be taken at the hospital if I go through the ER. Should I just wait it out, or get checked out? Thanks.Well scoliosis can cause back pain – but it never has in me, not this bad, and I’ve had it for years. Sorry if I worded it incorrectly.Anyway after sleeping more today right now the pain is mostly gone in my abdomen but it still hurts in my joints, and I still haven’t eaten anything today because I’m very nauseous. With that said, it feels like a virus (i got sick A LOT as a child with things like this), but I’ll monitor the abdominal pain in case it starts to get worse, and then maybe I’ll take a trip to the ER.
A: GO TO THE ER!!! it could be LOTS of things – gallbladder, appendix, or 1000 other things. better safe than sorry, get your a** to the doctor now! if your appendix ruptures you could be in world of sh*t!
At what point should I go to the hospital for a heavy period or bleeding?
Q: I lost a baby a couple years ago which resulted in anemia for a while, and had a pelvic infection and BV the year I got pregnant with my surviving child. I have been diagnosed with dysmenorrhea. The pelvic infection and the other (uterine?) infection caused severe abdominal pain. I do not have abdominal pain but am having problems with feeling a little lightheaded or dizzy and forgetfulness that is bothersome and disturbing to me (I’ve been wondering if I’m going through “the change”), have hypertension, had to just change another tampon and pad, had a clot this morning that looked about the size of my thumb about 2″ round and another much smaller clot, and physical back and neck pain. I use condoms and the calendar method. I had a time several years ago when I tried to give/sell my blood plasma, and after a lot of testing they said I had too much protein in my urine (?) and therefore couldn’t use my blood. We can’t afford for me to have to go into the hospital right now.To clarify my question, how much bleeding or how many times should I be changing my feminine items for it to be an emergency?I called a pharmacist and asked about the dizziness and forgetfulness, and he told me to bring it up to the doctor on my next visit (I have a follow-up appointment), that I could be having TIAs, etc.
A: The heavy bleeding along with the lightheadedness makes me think anemia. You have had this before, does it feel similar to you?The bleeding sounds heavy enough to consult your doctor or health care provider, but not necessarily an ER.If the bleeding changes, ie becomes bright red, and increases dramatically, it is an emergency. But at this point , I would probably call and find out what your HCP recommends.Over the long term, an iron supplement might help. It isn’t a quick fix, but you may be iron deficient. Blood loss causes shock if it is excessive, so be on the look out for a drop in blood pressure, usually experienced by lightheadedness, and certainly if you pass out, it’s time to get help pronto.Hope this helps,KarenPS The protein in your urine is a concern; If that is still present, you might need medication to prevent kidney damage. Don’t put that off , OK?
Sharp abdominal pain and dizziness at 16 weeks pregnant?
Q: I asked this already but got no answers..I hope someone will help me and I apologize for it being so long…Okay so I’m 16 weeks pregnant tomorrow. I have been having severe headaches for about 3 weeks but they stopped for a few days. (i called my dr about them and was just told to take tylenol..everything good there)…okay so the last week or so, off and on, I’ve been having sharp pains in my lower abdomen, sometimes it goes up to my mid abdomen but mostly lower abdomen. I also got dizzy today while sitting down. I figured the pain was either round ligament pain as my dr suggested or the baby is kicking in odd spots and it’s hurting me….But they’ve been lasting longer than a few seconds, almost a minute to a minute and a half and are about every 3-5 minutes…I doubt its braxton hicks as i’m just now 4 months pregnant. I am overweight but I don’t know how that would contribute to the pain. I have changed positions, drank more water, walked, took a warm shower (not hot) and nothing seems to be working. I called the dr’s office and left a message and have yet to return my call. I told my husband if she doesn’t call by the time I take him to work, I’m going to the ER to get checked out because I feel like something is wrong. Do you think I’m over reacting or should I go get checked to be sure?? This is my first pregnancy and I don’t know what’s normal and whats not..
A: Well, the biggest concern is preeclampsia, commonly occurs after 20 weeks pregnant but can happen sooner. Your pain, dizziness and headaches are all signs of possible preeclampsia. Although, all of these things can be normal pregnancy symptoms also but it is worth getting to the doctor and see if you are having high blood pressure (part of preeclampsia). I am not sure about the pain you are having because the way you describe it could be premature labor with the timing and all. Round ligament pain should be very different from contractions and Braxton Hicks are not usually painful, only true labor. Going to the ER is your best and safest option – just in case! Hope all is well!
