what is a distended bowel?
Q: My 9yr. was complaining of upper left abdominal pain and we took her to see the family Dr. and the first visit found she had a urinary tract infection (UTI) and although she was still having bowel movements thought to rule things out we should have her take a stool softener. She took the prescribed med and the stool softener and still a few days later was still having pain…enough it would make her turn pale, although i think she does have a pretty high pain tolerance. So we took her back and they took a couple x-rays and said she has a distended bowel and wanted her to have a CT scan the next day and that was Friday and of course we have to wait for the radiologist to read the scan and the Dr.’s office is closed on Friday afternoons so here it is Monday and we haven’t heard anything yet. The waiting and not knowing anything about the bowel system is difficult, and she is still eating and having bowel movements although her appetite has decreased somewhat. Oh yeah and the first couple days she mentioned the pain she had belches that stunk like she had gas from the other end, I thought she had done that and it wasn’t. Can anyone out there give me some insight on why a 9 yr. old would have a upper left side distended bowl, still having bowel movements and gas? They also took blood to check her kidney output which I am assuming was to make sure she could get rid of the dye from the CT, and they were also testing for mono, because a couple children in her class have it. Although she doesn’t seem to have any of the other mono symptoms. She is a bit different in pain tolerance, a few months ago I took her to the Dr. because she was complaining of a headache and I knew she had been having a runny nose and thought she may have a sinus infection, after the exam the Dr. asked her if she had been coughing any and she said no and I hadn’t heard her and he said well she’s got a pretty good case of bronchitis, no other usual symptoms that most people get the only way he knew was listening to her lungs. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated…Thanks in advance from the worried and confused Mom
