Q: I have an extremely sharp pain in my upper left abdomen and it’s been reoccuring for the past week and I know its not constipation but I don’t know what it could be. The pains are so bad I have literally been hunched in a ball crying. I don’t know if this is serious or not or what it could be but it’s definitely not normal. Please help me.
A: Sounds like this isn’t the most pleasant experience. Determing the actual cause of chronic pain is difficult unless you have a history of past medical condtions that would possible attribute to your discomfort. Therefore, since your “sharp pain” in the abdomen has been occuring for the last 9 days, if this pain doesn’t subside, you should request an abdominal ultrasound from your doctor, which would rule out any abnormalities appendicitis, organ obstruction, and so forth. This would at least assure you that the pain might be related to a less serious condition. By the way, its probably not appendicitis as your pain isn’t on the right side. In the interim, tylenol or advil might provide some temporary relief. Hope to be a help
I have upper left abdominal pain that won’t go away please help! URGENT?
Q: Ok I am 33yr old Female and weigh 70kg my symptoms are – intense upper left abdominal pain that can last all day every day and varies on the pain scale from a 4-8 most days. The area is hot to touch and it sometimes feels like something is “stuck” it is something is pushing from the inside out just under my upper left ribs…just as recently as last week I spent 2 nights in hospital on a morphine drip and IV antibiotics and was given a CT scan which was normal, Barrium Xray – again normal, not pregnant according to blood tests and urine test that were both all normal, I have had a colonoscopy in the last 9mths – again normal, ultrasound also normal.. the pain fluctuates and I can sometimes have a whole week pain free although the last month has been relentless non-stop pain and bloating that is just painful and extreme ( at times I look like I am 6-8mths pregnant!) My doctor says I have Diverticulitis and has treated me now with 2 courses of antibiotics but the pain has not gone away and I am avoiding wheat products, have very little meat and I am not obese ( I am about 4kg over my recommended weight). The pain lately has been impacting on my quality of life so much that I can’t go to the gym, my clothes fit one day and not the next and the pain is intense (to the point that in hospital they gave me morphine on a drip for 2 nights). The surgeon didn’t want to do anything because they couldn’t figure out what is wrong with me – so they dosed me up with painkillers and sent me home… and the pain has returned! Just wondering what this could be ( qualified doctors opinions needed especially) and how to diagnose it/cure it because it is unbearable and I am tired of being a lab rat for tests that keep showing normal results. I am healthy in every other way mentally and in every other way. Also since being on the Morphine drip my usually like clockwork period is 4 days late – not sure if this is related to the morphine or not? My doctor diagnosed Diverticulitis but when I was in hospital last week they were skeptical about this as all the tests they did were normal – I am so frustrated as I am in pain and they could even see that at hospital and noted the bloating and heat of the upper left abdomen but even the surgeon (who didn’t do any surgery on me) was baffled by my symptoms.Would also welcome advice from anyone who has suffered exactly these symptoms and been given a diagnosis/cure.I am not tryng to lose weight… so that answer not relevant, Um I WISH it was all in my head – would make it much easier to cure, I am not stressed at all… Is anyone qualified actually going to answer my question? PLEASE
A: OH WOW! It is so strange to see what I have been going through written out by someone else! That feeling under your left rib is so hard to describe. I say it feels like late in pregnancy when the baby tries to put its foot through your rib. Obviously I have very similar symptoms and have for about a year, none of the tests have shown anything wrong (diverticulitis was ruled out with my colonoscopy) except I have recently tested positive for bacillus cereus (which they had to do a special request to test). I checked because I was drinking Slimfast drinks right before this all started Feb 09 and my reseach shows that while my symptoms don’t meet the more common ones for b. cereus, there are a lot of varieties with a large range of symptoms. My symptoms definitely respond to strong antibiotics (Vancocin and Flagyl) but then the pain and bloating is back 2-3 days after I finish them. Right now the most effective pain management I have found is Valium at bedtime and Bentyl 3 times a day (morning, lunch and dinner). I would like to stay in contact with you in case we are fighting the same unknown and will add you as a contact. You should also make sure you have been tested for H. Pylori, when we heard about it we really thought we had found out what was going on, but I tested negative. Oh and I see a very good psychologist, and have for years for my fibromyalgia. She works with my doctor on my health issues, and they are adamant that this is not all in my head!
Pain in the upper left abdomen. Just below ribs.?
Q: I’ve had this horrible pain in my “stomach” for going on 3 days now. I’ve had overall cramps for the past week that, by themselves, have had me in so much pain I couldn’t breathe through them. But at 3am Sunday morning (today is Tuesday), this sharp stabbing pain in my left upper abdomen woke me up. It feels almost like those cramps you get when you run (for those of us who are out of shape), but it doesn’t go away and it hurts more when I stand up or lay flat. If I stay sitting down, it’s not so bad. It worries me though because it’s come along with those “flu like symptoms” that doctors are always talking about. I have had a low fever for the same 3 days and yesterday it spiked up to 103.5. I have been able to control the fever so far today with Motrin, but it doesn’t touch the abdominal pain. Any ideas what this could be and how urgent it could be? I don’t have health insurance so unneeded trips to the ER are a very scary thing for my wallet.I’ve had this horrible pain in my “stomach” for going on 3 days now. I don’t have health insurance so unneeded trips to the ER are a very scary thing for my wallet. It feels muscular. It feels muscular, not the stomach organ itself. I’m wondering if maybe it could be some sort of hernia or something. I know that when I was pregnant (8 years ago), my OBGYN told me that my abdominal muscles had seperated more than anyone she’d ever treated and that it could cause me hernia problems down the road. I just always thought that would be more central, not so far to the side. I’ll try my best to explain the location of the pain. If you were to draw a line down the middle, it would be half way between that line and your side, pretty much straight down from the nipple. It’s in that area that not really your stomach, but not really your chest either…. that middle partjust at the bottom rib. What I eat doesn’t have any effect on it at all but movement does. Twisting at the waist as to look behind you makes it worse and being totally upright maes it worse. If I stay slouched and don’t put any tension on the abdominal muscles, it doesn’t hurt at all.
A: If you have a fever, it’s a sign of an infection your body trying to fight off. Gallstones usually become painful after a high fat or spicy meal – so see if the pain is worse after you eat something like that. If not, then it can be a stomach virus, which can give you horrible stomach cramps, are you having any other symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, or vomiting? Try taking some mylanta see if that eases the pain. If a pain killer helps it can either be your period, gallstones, a bowel disorder or condition, a pulled muscle. Or if you are female it can be related to your uterus. – Do you have any other symptoms you can think of so we can narrow it down?
