A: If you’re not turned off of IUDs entirely, it may be a good idea to see if you can’t get a Paragard. I had to have my Mirena removed three months in due to some unexpected and rare reactions, but I had the Paragard inserted shortly thereafter and have loved it ever since. It’s been well over two years and I’ve hardly had any issues with it at all.If you can’t have normal BCP due to migraines, though, you aren’t going to be a candidate for the patch, ring, or anything else like it because it contains the same hormones. You may, however, want to discuss the possibility of progestin-only pills, or POPs, with your doctor. They’re suitable for most women who can’t take CHCs (combined hormonal contraceptives) due to issues with blood pressure or migraine.Other than that, the only non-hormonal options available are things like barrier methods (condoms, sponge, spermicide, diaphragm, etc.) or surgical sterilization, but you’ve indicated that you probably haven’t completed your family yet. So I would ask your doctor about either the POPs or the Paragard. Good luck!

Q: I am wanting to use that form of birth control cause it lasts for 5 years and you don’t have to remember to take anything or go see the gyno every few months…i want to know some negatives and positives about it!!!

A: I just had the Mirena inserted about a month and a half ago. The actual insertion was VERY uncomfortable; I would advise taking some Advil or something beforehand. Also, my OB/GYN said that it is much less painful if you have it inserted while you are on your period; which I was not! The reason for that is because when you are on your period your uterus is slightly open, and when you are not on your period, they have to force it open. (which was VERY painful). I had moderate cramping for the first 2-3 days; the first day was by far the worst! I am still having some bleeding which my Dr. said was normal. He said that I can bleed for 3-6 months. It is very light and doesn’t happen everyday! It’s a small price to pay for effective birth control that lasts 5 years. In the last 3 days some of the cramping has come back, again nothing so terrible that I can’t live with it. I have been taking Tylenol or Advil and it’s better. The only thing that I was nervous about are the side effects that are severe, my Dr. said that they are very unlikely but it can happen. The Mirena can implant itself into your uterus and you have to have it surgically removes. It was cause massive cysts on your ovaries, most of the time they will go away on their own, but in rare cases they may have to be surgically removed. I hope this has helped a little! I’m a new Mirena user, but so far I love it! And the fact that it lasts 5 years is the BEST part!!!
