Irritable bowel syndrome questions for people who suffer with this?
Q: yes i recently went to the hospital for crapping in my upper right side of my stomach and stabbing pain in my lower left side. i thought it might of been my gallstones acting up. but they said my gall bladder was okay and they gave me medicine for IBS. i was wondering what are some common symptoms of IBS? ever since my hospital visit ive felt strong growling in my stomach and everytime i have a bowel movement almost immediatly after i feel like i have to go again and almost anytime after i ate i felt an extreme bloated feeling. and now im having this stabbing pain in my mid-back on the right side. im very worried about this stabbing pain. does this stabbing pain go along with IBS? and also what are some good tips for foods that can help ease symptoms or keep IBS from acting up so much? any help here is appreciated. thank you 🙂
A: You should make an appointment with a gastroenterologist. Not to many regular doctors know too much about the bowel and the diseases that an effect it. The stabbing pain is coming from your intestines. Since there take up allot of area, pain can come from below the belly button up to just below your ribs. you can also feel pain coming from your lower back. The feeling of bloating is either a blockage of some type, or food movement being held up for a bit, or gas build up from the food you ingested. Depending on what your problem is, IBS or IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) or crohn’s or colitis, there are books that can help you determine what is good and bad to eat. Although your doctor can suggest what has been studied to be good and bad, it is really all trial and error. Start keeping a journal of what you eat, and when you start feeling bad, take not of what you did eat and put it on your bad list. Hope this helps, if you have any more questions, give me a shout.
Dealing with antidepressants is depressing in itself! Anyone have any advice on where to go from here? (long)?
Q: I have been diagnosed with dysthymia with frequent episodes of major depression. Among my other diagnoses are various phobias and irritable bowel syndrome. The depressive symptoms themselves are hard to live with, but not completely disabling. I’m nearly always sad and pessimistic, and it takes quite a lot for me to enjoy myself. I have ridiculously low self-esteem and feelings of loneliness and emptiness seem to dominate my life. I have goals, but I’m hardly enthusiastic about them and they seem nearly impossible for me to fulfill. I also self-injure quite frequently, although I am not suicidal. What is most bothersome, however, are my physical symptoms. I constantly suffer from vague aches and pains that have no obvious medical explanation, and I am afflicted with chronic, horrible insomnia. I function on 2-5 hours of sleep a night, or, often, none at all. This causes me to live in a constant state of mental and physical exhaustion, and it is taking a huge toll on my health; I’m much more susceptible to infections, and when they hit, they hit hard because my poor immune system is plum tuckered out.Two months ago, I started taking Prozac. I didn’t feel any better, and my IBS worsened; I couldn’t have a bowel movement without the use of a laxative. The constipation was very painful and very disabling, and was my main reason for discontinuing the drug (I also slept a lot more but still felt tired all the time, had bizarre, vivid dreams, felt restless and jittery, lost some weight and had frequent nosebleeds, but I could have lived with those). Two weeks ago, I went off the Prozac and started on Celexa. The side effects were terrible. I felt like I had the flu; I was constantly vomiting and had frequent diarrhea. I couldn’t stand up without feeling like I was going to pass out. My insomnia returned full force, I began self-injuring more severely and more frequently, and I experienced some mild paranoia. (e.g., I’m arachnophobic, so I’d worry about a huge spider crawling in my bed; I wouldn’t be able to find my cat, so I’d worry that she somehow got outside and got hit by a car; I’d think that the noise from the heater was actually a burglar breaking in, etc.) I also had no appetite at all, and although I did force myself to eat, I lost nearly ten pounds on the medication, and I am now significantly underweight. Losing any more weight could be very dangerous. I have begun to wean myself off the medication, and I’m wondering where to go from here.I could go back on Prozac. It helped me sleep, and, who knows, the constipation could go away if I stick with the medication this time. My psychiatrist recommends that I try Zoloft next, as it’s supposedly the most helpful SSRI for dysthymic patients, but I’m hesitant to try another SSRI as I reacted so badly to the other ones I’ve taken. One drug I stumbled across that sounds very attractive to me is Remeron. The most common “side effects”: increased appetite, weight gain, and hypersomnia sound more like benefits than side effects to me! My depression makes it hard to eat, and the Celexa makes it nearly impossible to do so. Actually wanting to pig out on a bunch of fattening foods is almost a foreign feeling to me. I’d love to enjoy food again. And, of course, being a chronic insomniac, the idea of sleeping like a log seems like heaven to me. I haven’t mentioned it to my shrink yet, though, and I don’t personally know anyone who’s taken this drug. I feel as if I don’t know it well enough to make an informed decision about it.Have any of you tried Remeron or Zoloft? Should I try one of those, or just go back to Prozac? Anyone know of any other antidepressants that might help (it must come in a liquid, chewable, or dissolvable form because I cannot swallow pills)?Sorry this is so long, and thanks in advance!
A: i think Remeron is Mirtazepine and i was on this. It was great for my insomonia and reasonably good for my depression, it made me crave cakes and ice cream and i put on a stone in weight whilst on it. So I came off it as I hated how fat i was getting. I was also on Venlafaxine (Effexor) aswell and am still on this. This is a strong anti depressant that is meant to help people when other meds havent. Its is meant to be as strong as amiltryptaline. Which is also a good anti depressant that makes you eat and helps you sleep. Its a Trycicilic, and I was on this for a while too but I was never on enough of a dose for it to help my depression (it just made me eat and sleep).I have been on Sertraline/Zoloft and this didnt work for me at all. You just have to keep trying. Something that didnt work for me might work for you as we are all different. Dont give up though. As you can prob see from my reply I have tried loads of different anti depressants. Its trial and error. Just keep trying.Lots of love x
Please correct me if im being strange!?
Q: hey everyone. Right well i dont want to sound deluded or anything or maybe i wont, who knows. The last time i had sex was back in jan/feb 2009, now its the end of march 2010. Is there anyway that i can be pregnant or is that too long? If im correct it nows gone over 11/12 months. My belly has kind of stayed the same, it nots overly big at all just looks abit bloated and pops out abit. Its still soft. I took a pregnancy test a couple weeks ago and it came out one red line and im not to sure what that means haven given no instructions. My period came last week and im feeling to test again after my period just to confirm fully. How look after my period can i take a test??? im just worried because i get bloated and have cramps, spasms etc but i also have irritable bowel syndrome and these symptoms are apparently common with it :S thanks…. x
A: you’re not pregnant. Sperm can only last up to a week inside the vagina and if you have also bieng having your periods that is another indication you’re NOT pregnant.
