Some 1982 pennies are zinc cores plated with copper, some are solid copper. You can weigh a 1982 penny to see which kind it is.

What was the last year pennies where made of mostly copper?
Q:
A: Actually in 1982 they made both types and you would have th weigh the 1982 cents to see which one was which. 3.11 grams copper & 2.5 grams copper plated. So you are same from 1981 down and the 1982's need to be checked.
chemistry lab question....about pennies?
Q: Last week we started a lab about whether or not pennies are made of copper based on calculating the density on Friday. I was going to be gone on Friday, so my teacher let me do the lab on Thursday. I didn't have much time to do it though, so I highly doubt I finished it.Here's what I had to do: I had to take a bunch of pennies (I counted 42 pennies, if it matters), then I had to measure the mass, which was 99.86 g. I filled water in my graduated cylinder to about 50 mL, then as I put all 42 pennies in, the water rose up to 69 mL, getting me at 19 mL worth of pennies.I know the formula for calculating density is mass divided by volume, I just don't get how that determines whether or not pennies are made of copper. Then again, I missed a whole day of school and I'm not exactly sure when it's due (see what happens when you don't pay attention, kids?).Sorry, I swear I'm normally not this stupid or unprepared, I'm just getting off to a bad start on my junior year. I'm also more of an artist than a science buff. Hahahaha! If I could get answers from all of you science buffs out there, that would be epic!Thank you! :)
A: what the people above said. and pennies are actually 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper according to wikipedia (i'm assuming you live in the USA), so your measurement makes sense if zinc is approximately 5.26/8.96 as dense as copper.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cent_(United_States_coin)
