What is gene therapy in depth?
Q: ok, i need a little help with my AS Biology work please. For a start, what happens during gene therapy? How can you distinguish between gene therapy using viruses and liposomes? What’s the difference between germline and somatic gene therapy? And are there any ethical issues? Is there any evidence to suggest that gene therapy is not completely effective in treating or curing diseases?A lot of you are probably thinking, “Do it yourself” but in all honesty i am rubbish at this subject. Why take it you ask? Well i apparently need it to get into the Uni i want to study Psychology 🙁 . Please help me.
A: Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent disease. In the future, this technique may allow doctors to treat a disorder by inserting a gene into a patient’s cells instead of using drugs or surgery. Researchers are testing several approaches to gene therapy, including:Replacing a mutated gene that causes disease with a healthy copy of the gene.Inactivating, or “knocking out,” a mutated gene that is functioning improperly.Introducing a new gene into the body to help fight a disease.Although gene therapy is a promising treatment option for a number of diseases (including inherited disorders, some types of cancer, and certain viral infections), the technique remains risky and is still under study to make sure that it will be safe and effective. Gene therapy is currently only being tested for the treatment of diseases that have no other cures
Gene Patenting: Is it right?
Q: Just wondering what people’s opinions are on this.I don’t have a problem with the GM patents. If some company genetically engineers corn to be resistant to a disease then sure they did ‘invent’ that strain of corn and a patent should be in order. But what about the patent claims on isolated gene sequences of, say, humans? Is it really an ‘invention’? These genes are naturally-occurring genes after all.One argument in favour of patents is that it would not be economically viable to continue research since there would be no way money can be generated; however wouldn’t it be more profitable if all these naturally-occurring genes were discovered and in the public domain and then all the biotechnology firms develop and patent whatever it is they are wanting to do with them (e.g. a gene therapy)? Would we not make more progress in treating diseases and what not if there are heaps of biotech companies working on a cure rather than keeping the doors locked on the actual gene sequences? I mean, how much progress would we have made if the Wright Bros patented the art of mechanical flight?? Probably still have little Fokkers and Spads (no doubt the children of Orville and Wilbur would be very wealthy!).To me patenting naturally-occurring genes sounds like patenting a molecule or gravity or something like that and it also seems like it is counter-productive since it restricts the free-for-all development of cures and medicines and therapies, etc…What does everyone else think about this? Do you like the idea that a handful of corporations own the genes that make up yourselves?
A: As you point out, the sequences in question are naturally occurring. Accordingly, they are not patentable. Methods of making or using them might be patentable.
Would I be considered Conservative or Liberal?
Q: I don’t like to be grouped into a certain category for my own independent beliefs, but I am curious about what I would be considered as. I believe in equality for everyone. People who are women, men, black, white, mixed, gay, straight, etc should be treated equally. We are all human beings and we can’t be confined into one certain category. It’s terrible how violence and prejudice can start just because you are considered to be “different” or in a separate group that other people. Government funding should be invested in the science and medical area. We should discover cures for more diseases and gene therapy. I think America’s laws are focusing too much on people who smoke marijuana. I have never done drugs, never will, but cigarettes are so much worse. Medical marijuana helps the sick and marijuana’s effects aren’t terribly bad. I think it’s wrong for teens to smoke it, but our jails should be filled up with people for more serious crimes that actually harm other people. People who abuse heroin and other hardcore drug should be more punished (especially drug dealers). Prostitution should be illegal everywhere. I hate the idea of war, but I know we need a military or else our country would be overthrown. I believe in nonviolence and it’s sad that children are losing their dads, moms, sisters, and brothers in wars. We also shouldn’t be in Iraq over oil. I respect everyone’s religion as long as they are a good person and don’t harm others or are prejudice. America is doing a great thing to help Haiti and other third world countries. People shouldn’t be allowed to own handguns. It only causes unneeded violence and I hear so many stories about innocent children taking their parent’s gun and use it as a toy. I am not a vegetarian, but I respect them as long as they respect my views. So tell me what you think :). I am 15 years old.I think it would be better if there was no Conservative vs. Liberal, Democratic vs. Republicans, Christians vs. Atheist, etc. It would be better if everyone had their own independent beliefs. I just want to know if I would be considered conservative or liberal, because I’m just curious. Also please tell me why. I don’t hate either groups. I can’t hate someone I don’t know (:Some people can have views that are conservative and liberalAlso….I don’t want to sound ignorant, but I’m honestly not sure about the tax issue. I’m only 15, so I don’t really have any experience with that.
A: The viewpoints you listed are mostly liberal. I agree with almost every point you made and consider myself very liberal.
