Q: Today at one of my prenatal visits I was presented with the option to test for genetic disorders like down’s syndrome, spinabifida, cystic fibrosis, and a few other genetic disorders. (pardon my spelling) I know these things happen to everyone, but I have a clean medical history in my family, and it costs 800 dollars! (it’s not covered by my insurance) What did you do? I don’t feel as if I would terminate the pregnancy should my baby have any issues of that sort anyway. I wonder how common issues of that nature are. I know this question is sortof all over the place, I just need some encouragement, the decision is scaring me. Should I test or not? What would you do? And in the situation where you found out your baby did in fact have a genetic disorder would you terminate your pregnancy? Is is rediculous to be worrying myself over these issues? To be honest its not something I ever even considered.

A: I had those options also. But I declined all of them because it’s not like i’m going to give up my baby if it’s not healthy and not they way i want it. I’m still going to want the baby, and I also didn’t want to pay the money if my insurance doesn’t cover it. I don’t think that makes me a bad parent for thinking that but, thats how i felt. I don’t think its ridiculous for worrying yourself, its natural.It’s absolutely up to you, talk to you’re doctor about it, and if you want, talk to your parents too or any family member. But don’t stress over it.
