Stress, a change in diet, illness, travel, are some reasons periods are delayed. Don’t worry, it’s usually nothing to worry about.

Why is my period two weeks late?
Q: I haven’t taken a pregnancy test because I am admittedly stuborn and want to find another reason why I’m late. I’ve always been safe, always always always, and condoms are 98% effective and last time I had sex it was like, three, four days after my period and those are suppoused to be your least fertile days, so what gives!I’ve done some research, and have come up with the following:It’s late because I went vegan right before my last period, back in late may, and although I’ve been a vegetarian for 7 years a severe change in diet is known to change or eliminate your cycle, isn’t it?And soy, which is the basis of my vegan diet, is high in natural estrogen and it can change or eliminate a period as well, right?I’ve always had a weird cycle. I counted out that from feb to march it was 16 days, march to april the regular 28 days, and april to may was 38 days. right now it’s been 42 days or so. For me that’s not too weird to have such a late perod if my cycle is that off, right?I was really, really stresed out during the beginning and middle of june because of finals and grades and frustration with teachers, and high stress is known to make you skip a month, right?annnnnd that’s all i’ve got.am i crazy or are those all good reasons?because believe me, i do NOT want to be the next episode of “sixteen and pregnant”and i really don’t think i am, i can’t smell any better than normal, i am not “glowing”, and my boobs are not tender haha.so, why’s it late?!
A: Periods can sometimes be late for no reason at all. Since you are young, it isn’t uncommon for them to be irregular. If it doesn’t show up soon, you might want to go to the doctors and get it checked out to make sure it isn’t anything serious and they can do a pregnancy test while you are there just in case. Just so you know, some women don’t notice any changes while they are pregnant. But I really don’t think you are pregnant.
I am not pregnant, But I am more than two weeks late for my period. Whats going on?
Q: My husband and I are trying to get pregnant. My last period was 6 weeks ago. I have taken 5 different pregnancy tests (one at the Dr today and also had my blood drawn – I am waiting on those results) but all have come back negative. Still – there is no sign of my period. I have had some cramping pains and when I stretch there is a quick sharp pain on my left side. I asked the Dr if he thought I could have an ectopic pregnancy, but he said that I have to test positive for pregnancy first, so it couldn’t be that. I was sick last month and took azithromycin to clear up some tonsilitus. Could this be the reason I missed my period? What are some other reasons? I wasn’t stressed before – though I am now! So I don’t think stress is why I missed my period. Any help would be appreciated – Thanks! Also – can I still ovulate this month without having had a period?
A: First of all hun, I was exactly where you are like 3 weeks ago. There are many reasons that you could be late on your period. The biggest and most probable reason is that you are trying to get pregnant which can be very stressful in itself. Stress is like the number one reason that women miss their periods. It is also very difficult to conceive when you are stressed out. You need to relax! I know it is tough, and I know you are anxious to get pregnant but you just need to let nature take its course. The medications you took would not have affected anything and you will not ovulate until you have your period. Ovulation occurs approximately 14 days after your period. Wait for your blood work to come back because that is the fool proof way to know that you are pregnant. A urine test is not always accurate, and you may be pregnant, you just don’t have enough of the pregnancy hormone in your urine yet. I hope this helps you, i’ve been there and I JUST found out that I am pregnant. Wasn’t until I was 7 weeks pregnant that I had any of the hormone in my urine 🙂 Cheer up and Relax, It will happen when the time is right. Good Luck!
two weeks of cramping before starting my period two weeks late?
Q: I was two weeks late starting my period (started today), but i started having cramps at the normal time. also, i’ve had other symptoms such as sore breasts and being tired. I am definitely not pregnant — i thought i was but the blood test was negative. i had a faint pos home test, but i looked later & it was close to expiring and may not have been stored ideally. Also, I don’t know if this is relavent, but i am in the middle of being treated for bacterial vaginosis, and several months ago I found out I had trichomonas & was treated, along with my husband (whom I’ve been monogomouse with since we got together 15 months ago. also, this is my first cycle off the pill, so i’m thinking that would be most likely to be affecting it. but the fact that i’ve been cramping for over 2 weeks doesn’t seem right. could it be a sign of a condition, or is it just my body trying to get itself back on track after being on the pill for over a year? why the cramping for so long? (& it’s not severe or anything, just normal cramps) anyone know?the pain is standard cramps, not the worst i’ve had (i’d say around 2-3 on the 1-10 scale, not much more than discomfort). about the same as when i was on the pill, pain wise. and it comes & goes at the same intensity each time (roughly), like cramps do. i do still have some cramping today, i just started my period late this morning and since then it’s been milder. i expect it will be gone tomorrow, as the cramps usually go away after the first day.i just thought it was weird that it started at the normal time & continued for two weeks until i finally started.the pain is standard cramps, not the worst i’ve had (i’d say around 1-3 on the 1-10 scale, not much more than discomfort). about the same as when i was on the pill, pain wise. and it comes & goes, like cramps do. the past couple days it’s been a little worse (more toward 3). i do still have some cramping today, i just started my period late this morning and since then it’s been milder (1). i expect it will be gone tomorrow, as the cramps usually go away after the first day.i just thought it was weird that it started at the normal time & continued for two weeks until i finally started.oops, i thought i caught that first one before it went through. sorry :-[
A: It could be either. At one point in my life because of a medication I was on was affecting my hormones oddly enough that my periods were getting late but my cramps or normal pms symptoms started at a normal time.At another point in my life when I was no longer on that medication the early cramps were actually my bladder causing me pain. Since you had BV that is a possibility. Also, it could be a combination. You need to talk to your doctor about this. There are a number of possibilities and it takes tests to know for sure. I hope you feel better soon. Something to think about….was the pain pretty much the same during those 2 weeks? Do you still have it did it get worse? How severe is the pain 1-10?
