I’m trying to get pregnant. I’ve been off the pill for 4 months now. When is the best time to get pregnant?
Q: I have a 2 year old I was on the pill the last time I got pregnant. I’m wondering why I’m having such a hard time now that I’m not even on the pill. I’ve been researching ovulation and it seems there’s only a couple of days in the month that you can get pregnant. Is this really true?
A: Yes, check out fertilityfriend.com. Your best chance of conception are the 2 days prior to ovulation and the day of. However, once your egg is released, you only have a 12-24 hour window for it to be fertilized. Therefore, it’s best if the sperm is present when your egg is released. Sperm can live up to 5 days, but generally only live 2. The raw egg white cervical mucus you have the couple days before ovulation helps protect the semen, so when you see that cm, you should have sex. It’s not necessary to have sex everyday because sperm need about 36-48 hours to rebuild and since they generally live for 2 days inside the womb, it’s better to have sex every other day. My OB recommends having sex every other day from at least day 10 of your cycle until day 20.Usually you are most fertile the first month after coming off the pill because you are most likely to ovulate that month. I made the mistake of waiting a month to make sure my cycle was regular. Although my cycles continued to be regular, I was not ovulating regularly (I learned this from charting my daily basal body temperatures). My OB prescribed Clomid and I conceived the first month. Unfortunately I miscarried, but I did end up conceiving again 8 months after my miscarriage and have a healthy baby girl. My husband and I are ttc again. This is our 6th month (4th month on Clomid). It can be frustrating, but I’ve heard from a few medical sources now that with everything that has to be just right for conception, it’s a wonder it happens at all. That has helped me deal with the disappointment each month I don’t conceive.Best of luck to you.
