Please Help!! What could be causing sharp pains on left side of my pelvic area?
Q: I'm a 35-year old woman who's never had children, any sort of surgery in my pelvic region, and a couple of months ago, I started having these weird sharp pains usually on the left side of my pelvic area. They will last for 1-2 seconds, but sometimes sharp enough to give me that "take your breath away" type of feeling. Like someone is punching or hitting a nerve from the inside out. They're also never in the same exact place and they don't happen everyday. Sometimes I feel them lower, others more to the left, or even near the top - parallel to my belly button, and even on the right side on occasion. For some reason though, it's when they occur on the left side, I get all freaked out. They can happen when I'm just sitting down at the computer or when I'm laying down watching TV. Not experiencing any other symptoms - i.e. changes in menstrual cycle, nausea, fever, bleeding, etc. Anyway, it's really been bothering me and on my mind a lot. I feel as though I'm making things worse by constantly worrying and don't want this to interfere in my daily life anymore. The anticipation of feeling another jab of pain is making me miserable, and what's worse is I don't currently have health insurance and am in the process of looking for a job, so I really can't afford to cough up the cash to be able to get this checked out. So, I'm here today to see if any other women out there have gone through something similar and perhaps have thoughts on what could be causing this. I would GREATLY APPRECIATE any helpful feedback!!!! Many Thanks!!Ramona, thank you for your feedback. Forgot to mention I'm not pregnant at this time. Actually just started my period yesterday and did feel a zinger of a pain last night. This one did feel like it was right on my left ovary. I also noticed that a day or so before my period began, I did have the pains, but they were further down, not near the one I had last night. Perhaps I need to start keeping a journal noting when/where the pains occur. Hopefully, when I can get in to see a doc, this will help pinpoint the problem, as I've read it can be really tough at times to diagnose what's causing pelvic pain. Spoke to my good friend yesterday who went through something similar and went to the doctor, had CT scan of area, and doc couldn't find anything. She said stress most likely was the culprit. Lord knows I'm under a lot of stress trying to find a job, and worrying about this pain is adding to it!
A: I am 39 and have had 3 children and my fair share of female problems. My first thought when you described what you are feeling is an Ovary Cycst. I had one on my left ovary when I was 18 and it had gotten to the size of a grapefruit. My doctor had put me on the birth control pill so the hormones would shrink the cycst. Weird but it worked. The second thought I had is that if you are sexually active that you may have a tubal pregnancy. Either way you need to be seen by a doctor. Check to see if you have a health clinic or free clinic in your town or surrounding area. If you are unsure, call the hospital, police, or fire department. They will be able to help you find one in your area. One other thing is that I have the same pain on my left side every month when I am ovulating. Dont know why but for 1/2 - 1 day it hurts like the dickens. Hope this helps you and good luck.
What could be the cause of the pain I've been feeling in my ovary on the left side, that region I would say?
Q: I'm 17 and have been having my period since I was 13. They weren't ever really regular periods then and now I still get irregular periods. Since last year when the time would come for me to have my period I would get these sharp short stinging pains on my left side of my lower abdomen in the region where I would say my left ovary is located and I knew that it was associated with the sign that your body is telling you that you are ovulating because the pain would switch from left to right each month most of the time so I didn't think anything of it. But now I'm noticing that the pains always occurs on the left and that they are more pronounced and much more painful than what they used to be and I get them before and after my period. Also when I press the area it hurts very much and it doesn't feel right its like there is a small something there. I am experiencing the pain right now and it feels like I'm being poked with a small needle in that area over and over again nonstop and a pinching feeling. So I am asking this today because I just got off my period 5 days ago and I'm still experiencing the stinging sharp pains in my left ovary and I don't know what to do because I can't just go to the doctor without an explanation and a legit reason and I already told my mom about it. What could be the cause of this?, please help me I need some advice.Serious and educated answers please and thanks for your time. =)
A: It sounds like an ovarian cyst. The symptoms can be one or all of these:Irregular periods (which you said you have); Pelvic pain that may radiate to your lower back and thighs; pain shortly before your period begins or just before it ends; Pain during bowel movements or pressure on your bowels; Nausea, vomiting and sore breasts; Fullness or heaviness in your abdomen; and pressure on your bladder and difficulty emptying your bladder completely. ANY type of pain is a legit reason to go see your doctor especially since you say it feels like something is there. He/She will have an ultrasound ordered to look at what is going on.
Is high blood pressure common within young people, teenagers in particular (Repost)?
Q: Throughout my life (or as long as I can remember) I have had chest pains. The pain varies, sometimes on my left and other times on the right side. It feels like a sharp pain and lasts for a couple of seconds to a minute. The pain occurs quite often. I have a family history of hypertension, and so I know that is a big factor.Although it's extremely unhealthy, I love salt, I don't know what I would do without it. I know I have to reduce my salt intake to maintain a pleasant health. Quite honestly, I eat fast foods quite often, but only because there are many fast food restaurants near my school area and I just hate packing lunch in general. I measured my blood pressure a couple of months ago and it was 110/71 (give or take some). The only symptom of hypertension that I have is sharp chest pain.I'm 16, 5'9 and weigh 140, which is healthy for my height. I know I should consult a doctor, but what do you think could be the cause?Your help is really appreciated.
A: High blood pressure is uncommon in young people. You have normal pressure and weight. This is a plus. However your family history, diet and penchant for salt eventually will lead to high blood pressure. Reduce your salt intake and improove your diet to reduce your risk for high blood pressure.
