What are the chances of getting listeriosis during the pregnancy?
Q: Hi, I’m probably being paranoid about this… I recently ordered red salmon caviar (it was fresh) and ate about 2 tablespoons of it. Then I thought maybe I’m not suppose to be eating this while pregnant.. So I checked online, and found few sites that suggested not to eat unpasteurized caviar due to listeria . The one I ate was unpasteurized. How bad is this? Does all unpaseurized food contains listeria? if not, how possible it is for me to get listeriosis?
A: it’s like eating steak and worrying about getting e.coli. not all unpastuerized products have listeria, but it might so that’s why it’s best to steer clear.so, if you aren’t sick after eating it, then you are fine and just watch your labels next time!take care:)

A: Listeriosis, a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Healthy adults and children occasionally get infected with Listeria, but they rarely become seriously ill. Listeriosis is usually linked with pregnant women, but anyone can be affected by it.Normal symptoms of listeriosis are a lot like common flu symptoms and not everyone experiences symptoms and the most common symptoms of listeriosis is fever and muscle aches. Listeriosis symptoms are:Vomiting Nausea Stomach cramps Diarrhea Severe headache Constipation Persistent fever Stiff neck Loss of balance Convulsions The illness most often presents as a fever, or flu-like illness, but septicaemia and meningitis can occur in susceptible patients. To diagnose listeria a blood or spinal fluid tests must be carried out. Symptoms may appear rapidly within hours or as late as 70 days after consuming a spoiled product (average 21 days). Approximately 5% of the UK’s population maybe symptomless carriers of Listeria ssp and for many patients, the disease can be treated with antibiotics. But for high-risk patients, including the elderly, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems, the onset of the infection can be rapid.Infection in pregnancy is rare (about 1 in 20,000) but if it happens, the baby can suffer widespread damage; leading to problems such as meningitis, eye infections, pneumonia or jaundice. The baby may be born too early (premature labour) or be miscarried or stillborn. This is why pregnant women need to be aware of the risks and take precautions such as avoiding potentially contaminated food.The bacterium has been found in a variety of raw foods, such as uncooked meats, raw fish, raw shellfish, poultry, and vegetables, as well as in processed foods that become contaminated after processing, such as cook-chill meals, salads, soft cheeses, cold cuts and pates. Unpasteurised (raw) milk, or foods made from unpasteurised milk may contain the bacterium. The consumption of contaminated food is considered to be the principal route of infection and a wide range of food products have been implicated in outbreaks, including soft cheeses and meat-based pates.When the infection is mild, usually no treatment is required. For those more severely affected, often admittance to hospital is required to enable antibiotics to be given intravenously. Death can occur and in the United States, an estimated 2,500 persons become seriously ill with listeriosis each year and of these 500 die.
