A: Actually you need 3 females for every one male. This is so the females don’t get stressed by the males. If there are more males than females then the females become stressed and eventually can die. Chances are if the females have been with the males then they are pregnant. A male can impregnate a female in a matter of a split second. So I highly believe that they are pregnant.When you see a black gravid spot on a female, what you are looking at is actually the starting eyes of the fry begining to form. This will take around 28-40 days to fully form fry that can be released out of the mother. As time goes on, not in a day or two but a few weeks, you will notice that the gravid spot will enlarge. Not completely enormous but bigger than when it started. The female’s stomach will grow either slowly over time or one day there will be a large difference in size.Do not rush her prgnancy. I had a female that I thought would give birth in a day or two because of how big she was. Unfortunately she died later that day because the three males wouldn’t stop chasing her even though there were 9 other females in the tank. Well I figured that I would be curious and see how far along the fry were. So I opened up her stomach and tons of fry eggs spilled out. To my surprize they were not even fully formed. What I thought would only take a day or two, actually probably would have taken another week or a week and a half. So do not stress out the female by keeping her in a hatchery. All that will do is delay the birth and stress her out. It is better to put her in the hatchery after she starts giving birth.Patience is the key in this process.She will have fry, don’t worry, but don’t rush it.
