Q: Here is the situation:Im a sophomore. I came from a high school that basically screwed me over and chose not to prepare me for college. Freshman year was a challenge and ended up dropping alot of the freshman engineering classes except for Chem which I got a C in. The next semester, I decided to go pre-med, but Bio basically killed that plan/dream. Using that semester, I pursued other liberal arts majors such as Psych and Soci and Anthro, but I hated those so much (Psych especially) while taking the Freshman calc class, in which I passed with flying colors. So then the next semester, I decided to go back to Chem E and took summer classes such as Calc and the Chemistry of materials. I utterly hated the Chemistry of materials class (mainly because it wasnt taught right at all, the material wasnt the problem). So now, its sophomore year, and Im taking the Java class which is killing me since I dont know/like computers in that sense. Also taking Physics for the first time ever, which to my surprise is going better than I had expected, not doing super well, but its going pretty good for someone who has no physics experience. Im also thinking of pursing Economics, Spanish, and Mathematics minors, Spanish and Econ since I like those enough to take more classes, but not to have those be my life though, and Math for the sake of having it since in Engineering you do alot of the required math for the math minor as part of the major. But here is the twist, Im going to have to be in school for 5 years, possibly 6 with a co-op since there is an intro chemical engineering class that I should have taken but didnt since I didnt know about it (thanks to my advisor who didnt tell me)More info: Im 20 years old. I like Math thats not complicated and I can understand with a little work. I have a love/hate relationship with Chemistry (more love than hate depending on the teacher). I have always loved chemistry even in high school. Physics is hit or miss for me, I can do it and understand it just for the class but outside of that, no. And I cant stand Computers at all, as far as coding and writing programs. I love to write, and can write very well (papers that is). To top it off, I am basically in freshman year 2.0. One more thing, I dont really like anything else as far as liberal arts majors go or any other majors. So am I deceiving myself into trying to do this knowing it will be hard or should I keep going? Or should I try a different kind of engineering? Any advice and encouragement will be good. I know this is my decision but I want someone to impart some useful knowledge on me to help guide meI am also considering going into pharmacy but I really dont know how to start or what classes at my school would equate to pharmacy school admission standards. And should I get a double major in something instead of 3 minors?
A: It is really hard to figure out what you want to be in the future, but just remember, it’s not all about how many years you are stuck in school for, but the knowledge and understanding of what you get out of it. Unfortunately for some of us, we experience it the hard way or the “longer way” I suppose, and you are one of them.I would suggest going for your dream. If this currently engineering course is really who you are, then keep it since it will be a part of you for the rest of your life until you retire, but if you find that this process is too difficult that you wont be able to handle it, try a different type of engineering. Personally I think you are doing fine at the moment (despite the “waste of time” of subjects you didn’t really enjoy).. but hey! You can’t love everything that school has to offer, right? If you decide that Engineering is not for you, then give pharmacy a try. It doesn’t hurt to try something new!
