39 weeks and 4 days pregnant can I drink a glass of red wine?
Q: I have never drank a sip of alcohol either times I have been pregnant, but I have always heard people saying that its ok to have a glass of red wine here and there. Also, I have heard of peoples midwives telling them to have a glass of red wine and relax to try and go into labor. Does anyone have any experience with this? I would love to enjoy a glass of wine tonight. What made you go into labor?
A: I personally wouldnt do it. There are always risks when it comes to drinking alcohol. If I wouldnt feed it to them when they are out, i wouldnt feed it to them while they are in. However, I have heard of midwives telling women do to this. Perhaps you could talk to yours about it, and see what she recommends. Sorry im not more helpful.

can my 5 week pregnant girl drink a glass of wine?
Q: i have heard rumors that this would be okay, does any experienced people know
A: I am a researcher specializing on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders (FASD). The risk of a glass of wine is Not worth it! Some may have experience that they drank during pregnancy and didn’t seem to have a problem while anothers may have had a drink and had a child that qualifies as having FAS. Our cells are sticky – there are certain cell adhesion molecules that are expressed on the surface of the cells. When we add Alcohol to some cells- they are suddenly less sticky. Now- it all depend on what part of a baby is being formed at that particular moment as to what degree might be affected. There are also many different levels of harm this may cause from severe to very mild. I wouldn’t want to risk even reducing the IQ of my child by 1 point. There are so many women who aren’t informed or who are addicted and can’t stop drinking. I think that if you are asking about an occasional glass of wine- the celebration can certainly wait – toast with a nice glass of sparkling cider the fact that you are giving the child every possible chance. There is an interesting picture http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh27-2/IMAGES/Page179.gifIt shows a normal mouse embryo then with the addition of EtOH (alcohol) and you can see that the embryo is significantly altered. One glass of wine has a much lower blood alcohol volume than causes this effect but you should be informed of the scientific data and not just people’s experiences- some people seem more prone to the effects of alcohol on their unborn children and who wants to take that risk. Best of luck and congratulations on the upcoming birth!
