Do I have to take ADHD medication everyday?
Q: I got diagnosed with ADHD (combined type). I feel pretty functional outside of school work. Do I have to take my medication everyday or can I simply take it only when I know there is work to be done. Thank you all. I can really use your help 😉
A: ADHD does not have 1 set degree of severity, the disorder will affect everyone in different ways. This is why a treatment must be tailor made to suit the unique individual. Bakescheesesnacks, you are right to feel that the medication is not needed 24/7, its not like a heart medication which your life depends on. Im guessing you are still in primary school? Years 6 or 7? I felt the same way, when I was first on medication it was more to control my disruptive behaviour, which was a bigger benefit to those around me, I was no longer hindering their learning. As I got older, the need for me to concentrate and perform well in class became the main focus. Without medication I would not have been able to keep on par with my fellow peers in my studies. The hyperactivity, impulsiveness and weak mental focus are not very helpful when you are trying to maintain an A grade average right through your senior year.My point is, its your decision, i chose to study my butt off in school, and it paid off. But you may have better willpower than I did, you may be able to maintain constant level of focus and only need the medication for studying or exam days. These are all things you need to discuss with your doctor, and your parents. Try and explain to them you are lucky enough to only need medication for activities that require extremely high concentration levels, and the medication helps you maintain those levels. The side effects I suffered as a result of my dangerously high dosage were quite severe, a lot of people don’t like how the tablets make them feel. I’m not going to scare you with stories about my side effects. Make sure you see your doctor, and work out a balance. In the end all that counts is are you happy? Do you control the medication, or does it control you?Don’t let people pigeon hole you, ADHD is as unique as the person it afflicts. You might fight the site in my references rather interesting.
