Q: I have a crackling sound when breathing in upon waking in the morning. It continues when I lie in the same position, but when I take a deep breath, change position or get up, they go away. But this is happening every morning. What could this be?I have a crackling sound when breathing in upon waking in the morning. It continues when I lie in the same position, but when I take a deep breath, change position or get up, they go away. But this is happening every morning. What could this be?PS–I do not smoke.
A: Are you a smoker? It sounds like you have a bit of atelectasis, which is when an area of the lung collapses down a bit. When you sleep, you don’t breathe as deeply as you do when awake. When you do wake up, you take deep breaths and this re-expands the lungs, which crackle a bit as they expand! IF it happens all the time and you feel fine otherwise, it is nothing to worry about. If you feel short of breath or wheeze, you should get checked out by your doctor.
