What’s the least addictive anti-anxiety medication?
Q: My doctor gave me diazepam. Is there anything less addicive?
A: Most anti-anxiety meds are addictive. Another way to say that is that the body develops a tolerance to the medicine (it takes more and more to have the same effect). Benadryl was mentioned in an earlier post. This is an allergy medicine which has been used for anxiety and does cause some drowsiness. Mostly there isn’t any good way to reduce anxiety besides meditation or prayer. The medicines are ok if only used for a very short time like a crisis.
What is a good anti-anxiety medication or other remedy?
Q: I’ve tried Paxil and Luvox, and they have helped me a lot but not completely. Also tried Xanax, Klonopin, and Valium, but they tend to make me sleepy and are addictive. Does anyone have any other good medicines or alternatives that really calm the mind? Please share if you’ve found something that really puts you in a good state of mind, even if it is something that is not a medicine or herb, such as meditation.
A: Significant research conducted over long-term and numerous studies have pretty well proven that cognitive behavioral therapy is the very best treatment for anxiety. Anti-anxiety medications are addictive and over the long run not as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy (including relaxation training). This stuff is highly effective but when you are prone to anxiety, that is really hard to believe and you feel like punching anyone who suggests breathing exercises when what you feel like you need is a sledge hammer to the anxiety. But, please give this a try. It’s a lot of work, but if you’ll decide you are worth the gold standard in treatment and that you don’t want to waste years in a pharmacological run around (first the docs resist giving your the meds, then they do, then they say you’re dependent and take the meds away and then your anxiety escalates dramatically & in the meantime, you’ve wasted precious time, spent hard earned money & your poor liver has had to contend with clearing out all the crap from the meds.) Look up NIMH (national institute of mental health) meta studies on comparative anxiety treatments. You might also research the amazing effects of regulated breathing (breathing exercises / deep breathing) on your body chemmistry. It’s powerful stuff and you own it and no one can ever take it away – well, almost never (-:Good luck!

A: jayofelony is WRONG!!!! trust me i know what im talkin about i take buspar and it works, not too many doctors really know about it tho.prozac… or u can try this one:Azaspirones:Azaspirones is a class of drug effective in the treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) It works gradually over 2 to 4 weeks. It doesn’t have any harsh side-effects and doesn’t seem to cause sedation, nor memory and balance problems. It has not been said to cause that “out of it!” feeling. It also does not potentate alcohol. Azaspirones work slowly and people should not switch to benzodiazepines immediately. Example medications:BuSpar
